Monash University Fencing Club

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be a Monash student to join the club?
Nope! We are affiliated with Monash University but we run like any community club! We offer discounted prices for students, staff, and alumni.

Do I need to purchase or own any gear?
No, we offer a big selection of club gear for you to borrow. We provide everything you need to getting started at a club level for all weapons. We recommend purchasing your own gear if you intend on being competitive beyond intervarsity (different gear regulations).

What should I bring to my first session?
Bring comfortable shoes, a water bottle, and long pants. Shorts can be worn during warm-ups and training, however long pants are required for bouting.

How old do I need to be to join? Can my child join?
We accept members aged 16 or over. There are nearby clubs which run kids programs (Fioretto Fencing Club, Blacklords Fencing Club, Tizona Fencing Club)

Can I try it out before I sign-up?
Yes, we offer a free trial session to everyone interested. No booking required, just come along to any of our training nights. (Tuesday recommended). During Orientation Week in Semester 1, we run free trial sessions Mon-Fri.

What competitions can I do as a beginner?
You can compete in a wide range of events, from beginner-friendly to high-level. We run fun in-club competitions throughout the year, as well as regular intervarsity competitions between Melbourne, Monash, and La Trobe. Newer fencers can also enter novice state competitions for those with under two years experience. Additionally, each September we send a team interstate to UniSport Nationals, with both novice and open categories. We love bringing newer members along so they can experience their first major competition in a supportive, social club environment. More information about state competitions can be found here
