Reigning Premiers Fall as M. Uni United Produce Grand Final Masterclass
Defending premiers Monash Uni Geelong entered the Women's Grand Final hoping to go back-to-back, but it was M. Uni United who stole the spotlight, producing a dominant all-round performance to secure a memorable 10-wicket premiership victory.
After electing to bat first, Monash Uni Geelong posted a competitive 3/126 from their 20 overs, built around a classy unbeaten half-century from Gurveer Padam, who retired not out on 50 from 49 balls. Chris Walker contributed an enterprising 26 from 24 deliveries, while Liz Tubb provided a late burst with an unbeaten 20 from just nine balls, including two towering sixes. Naomi Sheppard also remained unbeaten on 24 as the reigning premiers finished strongly.
M. Uni United's bowlers ensured the target remained within reach. Cath Grant (1/17) and Kamaljot Kaur (1/24) were the wicket-takers, while the ever-reliable Wheels was outstanding behind the stumps, involved in all three dismissals and helping keep Geelong's innings in check.
Chasing 127 for victory, M. Uni United delivered a batting display worthy of a premiership. Opening the innings, Kamaljot Kaur launched the attack from the outset, crashing a brilliant 50 from just 33 balls before retiring. Her innings featured nine boundaries and shifted the momentum firmly in United's favour.
At the other end, captain and coach Linda Machin led from the front with a composed and unbeaten 52 from 51 deliveries, expertly guiding the chase. Fittingly, Machin brought up her half-century and sealed the premiership with a boundary, sparking celebrations among teammates and supporters alike. Wheels added the finishing touches with an unbeaten 12.
The chase was completed at 0/127 in just 16 overs, with M. Uni United reaching the target four overs ahead of schedule and without losing a wicket, underlining their control throughout the match.
Kaur's outstanding contribution with both bat and ball earned her Player of the Match honours, finishing with 50 from 33 balls and 1/24 from four overs.
While Monash Uni Geelong fought hard in defence of the title they won last season, the day belonged to M. Uni United, whose clinical bowling, sharp fielding and flawless run chase combined to produce one of the most commanding grand final performances of the year.
